The work draws on two traditions that have shaped how Emmett thinks about outdoor spaces: the Japanese garden philosophy of intention — where every stone carries meaning — and the Scandinavian commitment to outdoor living as a daily practice, not a seasonal luxury.
The result is a garden path that is not just a surface to walk on, but something that rewards attention. A reflexology path laid by StoneStep is designed for the feel of stone underfoot, the way light moves across varied textures, and the quiet sense that the garden was made with a level of care you can trust.
Background and experience
Emmett's path to stone work was not the conventional route. A deep interest in Japanese garden philosophy — the art of arranging natural materials with intention and restraint — led to years of study and practice in stone path design and installation.
That foundation was strengthened by hands-on training in traditional stone masonry and landscape construction, with a particular focus on the ground preparation, sub-base engineering, and drainage management that determine whether a path lasts three years or thirty.
Every StoneStep project draws on this combination of design philosophy and practical craft. The paths are not just placed on the ground — they are built into it, with the same care given to the 150mm of compacted aggregate beneath the surface as to the stone you see and walk on.

Why one person
Working alone is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. It means you deal with the same person from the first phone call to the last stone. There is no miscommunication between a salesperson and a crew. No variation in quality between one team and another. The standard is consistent because the person is consistent.
It also means projects take longer than they would with a crew. That is the trade-off, and it is one that clients who value craft over speed understand and appreciate. A StoneStep path is not rushed. The care shows in the finished work.

StoneStep is based in Ardaghy, Omeath, on the Cooley Peninsula. Most projects are within Co. Louth and the surrounding area:
